Book Club Discussion Questions

  1. There are many roles in the Orders, but perhaps the most important are the Keepers. Not all Keepers are the same. Alfils, like Anya and Zack, are the spiritual guides. Some Alfils can communicate telepathically while others can receive messages from the elements themselves. Cavall, like Jade and Steele, are the fighters of the group. Cavall are given weapons, like Jade’s daggers, to protect their Specks. And lastly, Torre, like Onyx, control the elements within their Order. If you could chose, which type of Keeper would you most like to be?
  2. Grims, creatures that take on human characteristics, are a mystery even to members of the Orders. Talos explains (pg. 126) that no one really knows where they came from. What’s your theory on their origin? Are they creepy or cool?
  3. When Onyx was young, her father died and her mother withdrew from her life. Do you think this loss of family had an impact on her relationship with Philip?
  4. Onyx admits that she remained in a relationship with Philip far longer than she should have. Why do you think that is? What was it his money or something more that tied her to an abusive boyfriend?
  5. We find out that multiple characters (Angel, Willy the bellhop, a doctor, and Chester) were on some level aware of what is happening between Philip and Onyx, but no one steps in. Why do you think that is and what should have been done differently?
  6. During her training, Onyx learns that the Order of Fire has been banished beneath earth’s surface (pg.162) but later, Savi warns that their numbers are growing. How do you think this will affect the future of the Orders?
  7. Throughout the story, both Talos and Steele are drawn to Onyx, creating tension between the two that eventually erupts into an argument (pg. 230). Steele’s intentions are clear but the same can’t be said for his friend. Is Talos’ desire to guard Onyx just because of his position as her Protector or do you think there is more to his desires than he lets on?
  8. Instead of telling Talos his future, the prophet Madam May recites and ominous poem (pg. 127), what do you think it means? Who are the Judas, the wolf, and the lamb and how will they play a part in the future? Do you think “with death comes balance” refers to his demise or someone else’s?
  9. The Order of Air and the Order of Water are willing to play dirty to get what they want, were you surprised by the ally they found in Oli?(pg. 227) Do you think Oli got what he deserved in the end? (pg. 258)
  10. Barafu gives Onyx a gift of an Ocean Ferry that will instantly bring her to the sea. How do you think this magical object will come to play in the future? Do you think the Queen of Water know something Onyx doesn’t?
